GMC JC Football Announces New Hire

Head Coach Bert Williams is pleased to announce the hiring of Chris Springer as the new Defensive Backs Coach for the GMC JC Football program.  Coach Springer will be starting his first season as Defensive Backs coach when the GMC Football programs starts it's spring practice on Monday, April 10th. Springer came to Georgia Military College after spending the previous three seasons at Western Kentucky University (2014-17). He helped WKU to a combined 31 victories, including a pair of Conference USA Championships and three bowl wins, during his tenure.

Head Coach Bert Williams stated, "Our entire staff was excited to be able to get Coach Springer on board coaching our cornerbacks.  We were happy with the many excellent coaches who applied, but Chris really stood out from the bunch and had tremendous references from some coaches we know very well.  I think he will be a great fit for us." 

In 2016, WKU won its second Conference USA title and capped off an 11-3 season with a 51-31 victory against Memphis in the Boca Raton Bowl. As cornerbacks coach/graduate assistant, Springer mentored junior cornerback Joe Brown to second team C-USA honors and fellow cornerback Levarick Johnson to honorable mention C-USA honors.

In 2015, WKU won the C-USA title and capped off a 12-2 season with a 45-35 victory against USF in the Miami Beach Bowl, while finishing the season with a No. 24 final ranking. As a defensive graduate assistant working with the secondary, Springer helped contribute to a massive defensive turnaround in 2015 as WKU allowed 50 fewer yards through the air and 104 fewer yards overall compared to 2014. WKU was the third most improved scoring defense as well, allowing 14 fewer points per game, while finishing second in the nation with 31 turnovers created and leading C-USA in interceptions. Springer helped mentor cornerback Prince Charles Iworah to honorable mention C-USA honors. Iworah went on to be drafted in the seventh round by the San Francisco Forty Niners.

In 2014, WKU finished the 2014 season with an 8-5 record and capped of the season with a 49-48 victory against Central Michigan in the Popeye's Bahamas Bowl. Springer helped mentor second team C-USA cornerback Wonderful Terry and fellow cornerback Cam Thomas to honorable mention C-USA honors.

Springer got his coaching start in 2013 at Eastern New Mexico University, where he oversaw the wide receivers for one season. With Springer on staff, ENMU had its first winning season since 2004 and secured their first LSC title since 1991. Springer, coaching the wide receiver and working on the strength staff, helped mentor WR Jacob Johnson to All-LSC second team honors.

Springer played at both Bethel and Lindenwood University where he was a three-year starter and four year letterman while also a captain as a defensive back in his senior season. Springer graduated from Lindenwood in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and earned a Master's Degree in Sports Recreation and Administration from Western Kentucky in 2017.
