GMC Cross Country finds Success in the Classroom

After a successful season on the courses, the Georgia Military College Men's and Women's Cross Country teams was named Scholar All American teams by the National Junior College Cross Country Coaches Association.  For a team to be recognized as a Scholar All America Team the combined of GPA of all of the runners needed to be a 3.2 or higher.  In addition to this, Georgia Military College Men's and Women's Cross Country had many individual student athletes who earned an individual Scholar All America award.  To earn this prestigious reward, the runner needed to have their GPA for the fall quarter exceed 3.4.  Individuals on a Scholar All America Team.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment" exclaimed Rob Sherwood, GMC Cross Country coach.  "This award, on top of the many accolades they earned through their running prowess show the dedication to not only training and meets, but most importantly their classroom responsibilities."

For the women's team the following members were Individual Scholar All Americans: Sierra Brower (Pine Grove, PA), Destinee Hernandez (Merritt Island, FL), Jamacia Mitchell (Eastman, GA), Lucy Pitts (Chantilly, VA), Talisa Soto (Gainesville, GA).  Members of the Scholar All-American team who did not earn individual honors, but did earn team honors were Sarah Conners (Lagrange), Jessica Hurtado (Grovetown, GA), Carrie Kirkwood (Gray, GA), and Haley Valentine (Missouri).  Team members Hernandez, Hurtado and Valentine also ran in the NJCAA Division III National Championship in New York in November.

For the men's team the following members were Individual Scholar All Americans: John Dougherty (Gainesville, FL), Dominic Roberts (Las Vegas, NV), Jon Short (Evans, GA), John Parrish (Chatsworth, GA), Amos Prestwood (Eatonton, GA), Tyler Nguyen (Gainesville, GA) and Alvaro Garcia (Bronx, NY).  Members of the Scholar All-American team who did not earn individual honors, but did earn team honors were Adam Dougherty (Gainesville, FL), Austin Cook (Cochran, GA) and Sergio Drosihn (Miami Beach, FL).  Team members Adam Dougherty, John Dougherty, Austin Cook, and Dominic Roberts also ran in the NJCAA Division III National Championship in New York in November.

The men's team is looking forward to defending their NJCAA Region 17 Division III title next fall and repeating as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association champion.  The women's team also looks for Region and Conference titles in the 2017 season.
