GMC Softball Takes Two on the Road

After sweeping Piedmont JV in a home double header 8-0 and 8-7, yesterday the Bulldogs travelled to Demorest, Georgia for a return match and it was déjà vu all over again.

The Bulldogs started quickly as Katy Stamey and Ansley Wilbanks reached base on singles and that was followed by an RBI single by Carly Rigsbee. Danielle Downs followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Wilbanks. The game remained 2-0 until the 4th when Danielle Downs hit her first home run of the year. The home run was followed by a double by Jordan Crews and a RBI single by Natalie Johnson. GMC exploded for 4 runs in the 5th, using 6 hits and a walk to end the game at 8-0.

Madason Messer was the winning pitcher, shutting out the Lions for the 2nd time in less than a week. Stamey, Wilbanks, Rigsbee, Downs, and Johnson all collected 2 hits in the game. Crews led the barrage with 3 hits.

Game #2 was a little more tense. The Bulldogs scored 2 runs in the 2nd and 1 run in the 5th and Piedmont scored 1 in the third making the score 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. With 2 outs and nobody on base the Bulldogs made an error on a play that would have ended the game. Three consecutive singles tied the score at 3. Neither team scored in the 8th. Both teams scored 1 in the ninth. GMC scored 1 in the 10th and then their defense finished the game. Starting the inning with a runner on 2nd base Piedmont attempted to bunt her to third. Natalie Johnson grabbed the bunt and immediately threw to Katy Stamey covering third to put the tag on the runner. The next batter grounded to Carly Rigsbee at third. She threw to Jordan Crews at second who wheeled and completed a game ending double play at first.

Danielle Downs pitched all 10 innings to get her 2nd win of the season. Kiley Rediger led the offense with 3 hits, followed by Downs and Crews with 2 each. The big hit of the game was a 2 out single in the 10th by Mallory Parson to clinch the win.

The Bulldogs leave this afternoon for Marianna Florida to participate in Chipola College's Tournament. First game Friday is against #8 Salt Lake Community College. All games can be followed on Game Changer.
