GMC JC Women’s Soccer Ready to Get Back to the Top

The Georgia Military College JC Women's Soccer team won four GCAA championship games in the last five seasons and once again is loaded with talent to make another run at a championship. Coach Morgan has assembled a championship-caliber team led by Giselle Funes, Madison Nimmons, Lindsey Mathis, Jennifer Gomez, and Valentina Orozco.
It's been just three months since the Bulldogs last took the field as the #1 seed in the GCAA Tournament, and the sting of a semifinal loss is still fresh on their minds. The Bulldogs return their two top scorers from last season, Giselle Funes and Madison Nimmons. Funes was a 1st team All-Region selection and controlled the middle for the Bulldogs, while Nimmons is a skilled and powerful scorer who never stops working. Lindsey Mathis, Jennifer Gomez, and Valentina Orozco will add depth and experience for the Bulldogs. Orozco is a quick, agile attacker capable of breaking a defender down, while Mathis is an outstanding goalie. Gomez adds strength in the middle, and her playmaking ability will help the offense. Coach Morgan commented, "The experience and leadership these ladies bring will be instrumental to our teams' success."
Joining the talented returners is a group of fourteen freshmen led by Ashley Still and JaNiyah Phillips. Still, after her battle with cancer is getting a second chance at playing college soccer and is looking to make a significant impact on the field. She is a great finisher and will be on the receiving end of many setups from Funes. Phillips is fast, and her willingness to do whatever it takes to win will be a welcome addition to an already loaded front line.
The team opens the season on Friday, August 20, at Spartanburg Methodist. They will host Spartanburg Methodist at their home opener is August 27 at 4:00 pm.
