GMC JC Men’s Golf Battles Stacked Field at Coastal Georgia Fall Classic

The Georgia Military College Men's Golf Team traveled to St. Simons Island on September 12-13 to compete in the Coastal Georgia Fall Classic. This event attracted the top NAIA teams from the southeast, including NAIA Champion Dalton State. Austin Quillian led the Bulldogs with a three-round total of 215, just two over par to take 11th place.

As the Bulldogs prepare for another National Championships run, coach Guyer went young with his lineup for this event as three freshmen made their first collegiate starts. Lee Page, Jonathan Judd, and Bradley Butcher got a taste of what high-pressure college golf is like, and they will be better for it down the road. Austin Quillian and Lurner Benton were part of the 2021 National Championship Runner-Up team that helped the freshman through this grueling two-day 54 hole event.

Quillian started strong, firing a 74 in round 1 with Benton right on his heels with a 75. The three freshmen felt the pressure and managed their emotions well, but we could not score. In Round two, Quillian shot one under 70 and moved to tie for 15th at the end of the round. Benton struggled around the greens and couldn't get anything going.

In round three, the Bulldogs began to show their true colors as all players stringed together good holes to post the lowest round for the team. The day's highlight was Jonathan Judd's ace on the 184-yard par-three third hole, his second Hole in One of his life.

The Bulldogs walked away from this first event of the year, knowing they have what it takes to compete, and as they come into form, they will once again contend for a National Championship. Their next test will be October 4-5 when they travel to Piedmont Fall Invitational @ The Orchard Golf and CC in Clarkesville, GA.
