Lurner Benton and Austin Quillian Lead GMC to 2nd Place finish at GCAA Championship

The Georgia Military College Men's Golf Team hosted the 2022 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Championship on April 11 at Twin City Country Club in Tennille, Georgia. Lurner Benton captured his first tournament win, and Austin Quillian finished 2nd, leading the team to a second-place finish.

Lurner Benton's opening 69 was the only sub-par round of the event. He birdied #1 to get off to a good start. He added four more birdies and just two bogeys to take a four-shot lead into round two. Austin Quillian shot a 73 in round one. On a mission on the front, Quillian made the turn at three-under before running into trouble on the back. In the team competition, Tyler Harris and Braeden McDaniel each carded an 82 to give the Bulldogs a four-shot lead over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Round 2 started a little slower for the Bulldogs; birdies were hard to come by. Quillian bogeyed two of the first four holes, birdied #9 to open with a 37, and remained at one over on the 17th tee before dropping four shots over the last two holes to post a 77. Benton opened with a 39 on the front, birdied 11 and 13; he appeared to be building momentum and closed with a 37 to post a 76, securing his first collegiate tournament win. Tyler Harris (82) and Braeden McDaniel (85) were other counting scores for the Bulldogs.

In the team competition, the Bulldogs just missed as ABAC posted a 312 in the final round to earn a four-stroke team victory.

Excited about the team's success, Coach Gary Guyer commented, "This was a good event for us, we have some work to do before the National Championships, but things are heading in the right direction."

The Bulldogs will begin the eight-week preparation for the National Championships. They have won two National Championships in the last four events and have not finished outside the top three.
