Cross Country Conference and Regional Champions

The Cross Country season reached is culmination this evening at the Children's Industrial Home in Macon, GA for the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Conference meet.  The men's team ran first and were led by Sophomores Adam and John Dougherty (Gainesville, FL).  The two led the race from the start to the finish and crossed the finish line in 1st and 2nd place.  Freshman Austin Cook (Cochran, GA) was right behind them and finished in 3rd place.  All three earned spots on the All-Region team with Adam Dougherty claiming the GCAA Runner of the Year award.  Dominic Roberts (Las Vegas, NV) also finished in the top 10, with a time that qualified him for the NJCAA National Championship.  Alex Garvin (Hinesville, GA) was the 5th scoring runner on the day.  The GMC Men's team ended the race with 25 points and won the title by 12 points over Oxford College of Emery University.

Due to illness and injuries, the women's team was only able to field 4 runners.  This unfortunately was not enough to score as a team.  Destinee Hernandez (Merrit Island, FL) finished in 4th place to claim a spot an the All-Region team.  Jessica Hurtado (Grovetown, GA) qualified for the NJCAA National Championship with her run today.  Sarah Connors (LaGrange, GA) and Carrie Kirkwood (Gray, GA) were the other runners for GMC.  All the ladies ran fast today, and if one more runner had been there, the ladies would have finished in 2nd place.

The men's and women's team had a great season, and they have been a great joy to work with. GMC will be sending 6 runners, Adam Dougherty, John Dougherty, Austin Cook, Destinee Hernandez, Haley Valentine, and Jessica Hurtado to the NJCAA National Championships in three weeks.  If you see any of the members of the Cross Country team, please congragulate them on a great season.
