GMC CROSS COUNTRY PREPS FOR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

The GMC JC Cross Country teams traveled to Douglas, GA, for a mid-week clash with fellow GCAA Conference foes, Andrew College, Central Georgia Technical College, and host South Georgia State College.  The former Bear Kreek Golf Course hosted the event as the GCAA teams warmed up for next week's conference championship hosted by GMC at Council Farms.

Nicquelette Fazekas (Dixon, IL) and Paige White (McCrae, GA) continued to lead the way for the Running Lady Bulldogs.  Fazekas won the race with a time of 20:11, a season-best.  White was close behind in 2nd place with a 22:33.  The warmer temperatures, lack of shade, and a well-positioned hill near the end of the course resulted in slower times overall, but the team ran well.  GMC took the first nine positions in the race before another school had their first runner. Treeaunna Whiting (San Antonio, TX) ran a 23:53 and placed 3rd with Vanessa Alvarez (Naples, FL) finished in 4th place and Madison Nimmons (Lexington, GA) in 5th.  Coach Rob Sherwood expressed his pleasure over the team's improvement, "I was a good race for our women.  Last week the cooler temperatures spoiled us a little bit.  Two races in 6 days also made for some tired legs, but this race sets us well to challenge for the conference championship next week."

The GMC men's team had slightly cooler temperatures for their 8k race against the same schools.  Heath McDonald (Bogart, GA) finished in 2nd place with a time of 29:10 to pace the Bulldogs.  Daniel Turnipseed (Blythwood, SC) ran a 31:36 to claim 5th place.  He was followed by Jacob Cain (Brandon, FL) 7th, Bo Meadors (Plymouth, IN) 8th, and Jessie Booth (McDonough, GA) to round out the scoring for GMC.  Central Georgia Tech took the team title for the men, with GMC only 7 points behind.  It should be a good race next week for the conference championship.
