GMC JC Softball Picks up Split at East Georgia State College

The Georgia Military College Softball team picked up a split on the road Monday at East Georgia State College. Both games of the conference doubleheader were nail bitters, as each victory came in the seventh inning. The Bulldogs won the opening game 3-2 before falling to the Bobcats 5-4 in game two.

The Bobcats took an early lead in the first game, scoring single runs in both the second and third innings. Starting pitcher Jana Shellhorse held the Bobcats scoreless for the remainder of the game, allowing the Bulldogs bats a chance to wake up. The Bulldogs had chances throughout the game but couldn't break through until the sixth inning, when they tied the game 2-2. Brianna Painter and Whitley Ward lead the inning off with back-to-back singles before advancing up a base each on a double steal. Painter scored the first run on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Jessica Owens, and then with two outs and two strikes, Mckenzie Graves came through with a single to right field, scoring Callie Faircloth, who pinch ran for Ward. Caroline Hughes got things started for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh with a single to left field. Autumn Land followed that up with an infield single, and Painter reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Owens once again came through as she battled to a full count, fouling off several pitches before earning a walk, bringing across the eventual game-winning run. Shellhorse sat the Bobcats down in order in the bottom half of the second to preserve the Bulldogs' win.

Game two was a back and forth affair that saw five lead changes. Once again, the Bobcats started the scoring as they picked up a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs tied it up, 1-1, in the third inning as Owens picked up her fifth home run of the season on a solo shot to right-center. The Bobcats took the lead back in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. Two errors by the Bobcats defense allowed the Bulldogs to take their first lead of the game, scoring two runs on a double steal by Painter and Makensey Sapp and then a squeeze bunt by Ward. The Bobcats picked up a single run to tie the game up 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Sapp hit a solo home run, her fifth of the season, to dead centerfield to give the Bulldogs a late lead. The Bobcats just wouldn't be denied as they lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle and, after a pitching change, followed that with a two-run walk-off homer to right-center. Beth Eddins got the start for the Bulldogs, going six innings and allowing four runs on eleven hits. Layla Barron receives the loss in relief for GMC.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday, April 2nd, as they travel to Cuthbert, Ga to take on Andrew College's Tigers. The games will be at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
