GMC JC Softball Place Seven on NJCAA Region 17 All-Region Team

On May 6, The NJCAA Region 17 coaches announced their All-Region Teams, and seven GMC Bulldogs were honored, led by Sophomore Jessica Owens, who was named the 2021 Player of the Year.

Success as a team usually leads to success for individual players, and this year the Bulldogs had plenty of both. The team finished the regular season 32-14 overall and 18-6 in the Conference. Six times during the season, the Bulldogs had players named as player/pitcher of the week; Beth Eddins earned Pitcher of the Week twice.

Hard-hitting sophomore Jessica Owens earned Player of the Year. Owens led the league in RBI's (59), was second in Homeruns (14), and third in batting average (.435). Owens 14 home runs tie a GMC single season record, and with games still to play, she has the chance to set a new record. Owens was just as impressive on the field as she held down first base for nearly every inning of every game and recorded a .967 fielding percentage with only eight errors. Joining Owens on the First Team All-Region is freshman standout Whitley Ward. Ward was second in the Conference with RBI's (52) and fourth in home runs (12). Ward split time between right field and third base and has an outstanding .968 fielding percentage. Joining Owens and Ward on First Team is freshman pitcher Jana Shellhorse. Shellhorse led the Conference in strikeouts (149) and was second in wins with 16.

Four Bulldogs earned Second All-Region Team, including sophomore outfielder Caroline Hughes who batted .386 and was fourth in the Conference with stolen bases. Autumn Land batted .383 and second in stolen bases. Freshman catcher Macy Poisal batted .333, whose cannon for an arm kept runners at first base. Sophomore Utility player Mckenzie Graves batted .366 and could always be counted in for a clutch hit.

The Bulldogs will host the semi-finals on May 11 at 4 pm and 6 pm; with a trip to the NJCAA National Championships on the line, you can bet these women will bring all they have to the field.
