The Lady Dogs split their home opener with Piedmont College

The GMC Softball team (3-6) played in their home opener versus Piedmont College JV in a double header.

In the top of the first inning, Piedmont College drew two walks but were not able to capitalize and score. The Bulldogs followed that up in the bottom of the first with three straight outs to end the inning.

No action occurred until the top of the 3rd inning where Piedmont got the first run on the game on a walk in with the bases loaded and no outs. Pitcher Danielle Downs worked out of the jam with two straight pop outs and a ground out to allow no more runs for the inning.

Ansley Wilbanks drove in the first run for GMC to level it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. No runs were allowed by the Bulldogs in the top of the 4th and they followed that up with a strong showing in the bottom of the 4th scoring five runs, two of which on a two run homerun by Taylor Little making the score 6-1.

In the top of the 5th the Bulldogs walked in three runs to put Piedmont back in the game at 6-4 but still hadn't allowed a single hit all game. In the bottom of the 6th the Bulldogs closed the game out with a 6 run inning to put the final score at 12-4.

Danielle Downs and Kailyn Moore combined to pitch a no hitter.

In game two, Piedmont jumped out to a quick lead on an RBI single by Peyton Scott but GMC responded with two RBI singles of their own from Jordan Crews and Jade Moncrief to reclaim the lead at 2-1.

The Bulldogs scored once again on a wild pitch in the 2nd inning to build their lead to 3-1. Piedmont responded in the 4th inning with a big 3 runs to take back the lead, but GMC scored quickly in the bottom of the fourth to tie it up at 4-4.

In the top of the 7th, Piedmont took the lead with another huge run to make the score 5-4 going into the bottom of the 7th.

The Bulldogs had an opportunity to tie the game with a runner on second with one out, but couldn't capitalize and fell to Piedmont College 5-4 in game two.

Next up for the GMC Lady Dogs will be against Marion Military Institute on Saturday, February 6th with the first pitch slated for 1pm CST.
