Young Lady Bulldogs start Cross Country season well at UGA

On a beautiful Saturday morning, perfect for running, the Georgia Military College started what is expected to be a very successful season at the University of Georgia Cross Country Invitational held at the UGA Equestrian Center in Bishop, GA.  The event was a great opportunity for the running Bulldogs to compete with some of the best teams in the Southeast over a variety of divisions.  The meet was headlined by UGA, Georgia Tech, and Kennesaw State.  "Both of our team, men's and women's, were excited to run against teams of such high quality" said Head Coach Rob Sherwood.  "They wanted to see how their off-season workouts had prepared themselves for the season.  I was pleased with what I saw."

The women's team started their race at 8:45am and the relatively cool weather enabled the runners to compete in conditions conducive to good times.  None of the runners on GMC had collegiate running experience before, and all rose to the challenge.  Freshman Destinee Hernandez (Merritt Island, FL) led the team with an 18th place finish, she also was the highest placed female NJCAA runner at the race.  Sophomore Alicia Santiago (Hinesville, GA) was right behind her in 19th and sophomore teammate Sierra Brower finished 20th.  The Lady Bulldogs scoring finished with Jamacia Mitchell (Eastman, GA) and Jessica Hurtado (Grovetown), both Freshmen finishing in 23rd and 24th.  The GMC Women's team finished in 3rd place in the non-NCAA Division I race.

Both GMC cCross Country teams will return to training after the Labor Day weekend and race next Saturday, 10 September at the Georgia College Bobcat Invitational at the Council Farm Course on Council McCraine Rd.  The men will run at 8:30 am and the women at 9:30 am.  There are currently 15 teams that will be running in the women's race.
