Alvarez leads the way for GMC Women's Cross Country

On Saturday 22 September, the GMC JuCo women's Cross Country team traveled to Newnan, GA for the SCAD-Atlanta Invitational.  GMC was one of 6 colleges racing at the bucolic wooded property.  Although missing a few runners due to college visits, the team enjoyed their best races of the season.

The GMC women were led by Kaitlyn Alvarez (Sylvania, GA) who finished in 15th place and narrowly missed qualifying for the NJCAA National Championships with her run.  Fellow Freshman Jessica Sinno (Cape Coral, FL) crossed the finish line three places further back.  Other scoring runners for the Lady Bulldogs were Sasha Soto (Naples, FL), 33rd, Brianna Mosteller (Orlando, FL) 34th, and Laryssa Melendrez (Cape Coral, FL)  The women's team finished in 5th place.

Head coach Rob Sherwood was pleased by what he saw.  "Despite the heat and humidity, the runners had their best race of the season.  They have been getting lots of miles in their legs over the previous weeks, and the work is paying off."  He continued, "I expect Kaitlyn, Jessica and Jhakira Glover to all qualify for the NJCAA National Championships, hopefully next weekend in Albany.  They really have been working hard toward this goal."

Both teams will return to action this upcoming Saturday at Albany State University for the Willie Laster Cross Country Invitational.  The women's team will run at 8:30 am.  This is the last race prior to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Conference championship on 17 October in Conyers, GA.
